Tips to buy safely on the internet

Nowadays almost everybody buys on the internet, things such as clothes, furniture, electronic gadgets… And any company can create their online sale portal by services as Gospacer or Shopify.

Consumers have the right of been protected against frauds in online stores shopping, in the same way as buying them in a physical store. This appears in Ley de Protección al Consumidor en Línea de 1999.

In order to have our purchases totally safe there are several preventive measures to take:

1. To have all the data. When we enter in an online shop we should check the company: its physical address, its phone or fax number, or if the tax code appears. We should also try to verify this data to be real as they will be necessary in case of report that portal. And it would be also interesting to search for other users reviews.

2. The product data must be clear. A web which skimps on information about its products is not reliable, as if when they sell us the product is not what we thought we bought, we will need to justify it with that information.

3. The price (in the appropriate currency), the delivery cost or if this is free and the method of payment must appear in a clear way in the web.

4. Return policy. We never know if we will need to return a product for any reason, but if so, we should be informed before buying, about the steps to take, what guarantees they offer, restrictions…etc

5. The privacy conditions and terms are important to know what use our data will have (which data and what they will do with them), and also we should check if the web encodes the information so nobody else has access to it. If the web has no privacy politic we should distrust.

6. We should make sure that the web is safe. There are websites which falsify the url but is a web starts by https it guarantees our data will be safe. We will also pay attention if the web has the padlock icon, this will indicate us the validity of the safety certificate. If the padlock is red, the certificate will be expired or not valid, if it’s yellow it will mean that the certificate’s authenticity couldn’t be verified, if it’s white the validation will be normal and if it’s green the validation will be expanded.

7. It is recommendable to try to print the buy information we believe is necessary (quantity, product…) as we won’t receive the receipt or physical bill.

8. We should read the product small print, where we will know if it has defects, is used of is necessary to pay an extra expense.

9. Check the product’s price in other websites. If we find an excessively low price we will distrust, as it can be a forgery or be defective.

10. If registering is necessary to buy, it’s better to use a different password from the ones we have for our mails or social profiles.

11. Be careful with the wifi network. If this is public we should avoid doing important transactions as anybody will be able to see it if the connection is not encoded. At the same time we will try to change our home router password to another safer.
